A/Professor Kevin Alford obtained his primary degree MBBS (with Honours) from the University of New South Wales in 1970.
After Professorial resident and registrar posts at The Prince of Wales/Prince Henry Hospitals he obtained his Specialist qualifications (Royal Australian College of Physicians) in 1974, and was one of the inaugural Fellows of the Cardiac Society of Australia and NZ in 2004.
He had undertaken advanced cardiology training at Johannesburg General Hospital and Baragwanath Hospital in South Africa, and also The Hammersmith Hospital and New Charing Cross Hospital in the United Kingdom. In addition, he carried out specialist cardiac ultrasound training in the USA.
Upon returning to Australia in 1977 to commence practice in Port Macquarie as the first full time Cardiologist/ Physician, A/Professor Alford was appointed to the former Hastings District Hospital and later became the inaugural Director of Cardiology at Port Macquarie Private Hospital and Port Macquarie Base Hospital.
In 1977, he founded ‘Port Macquarie Cardiology’. He has been instrumental in the institution and expansion of cardiac medical services in the region including the formation of the Coronary and Intensive Care Units at Port Macquarie Base Hospital, and the establishment of the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory.
A/Professor Alford instituted the rotational positions of Intern and Resident Medical Officers, as well as Basic Physician Trainees and Advanced Trainees to the local hospitals.
With the technological advancements in non-invasive cardiology, A/Professor Alford obtained a Diploma of Diagnostic (Cardiac) Ultrasound in 1982 and introduced the broad range of cardiac imaging services currently available in the mid north coast.
In 2016, he founded ‘Kevin Alford Cardiology’ to focus on providing more affordable cardiology services to the Hastings – Macleay region, and establish dedicated cardiological services for the aboriginal community.
A/Professor Alford’s special interests include all aspects of clinical and preventative cardiology, including coronary heart disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, familial cardiac disorders, “athlete’s heart”, cardiac arrhythmias. He is also passionate about teaching, mentoring and examining at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
A/Professor Alford’s work has been widely published in journals, including Heart & Lung, Medical Journal of Australia and Clinical Ultrasound.

A/Professor Alford has a keen interest in teaching and played an integral part in the establishment of the Rural Medical School of UNSW in Port Macquarie. He has lectured extensively in undergraduate and post graduate forums, including State and National meetings for the College of Physicians and Cardiac Society of Australia & NZ. In 2016, he was appointed an adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of NSW.
He was the inaugural Director of Basic Physician Training and is the current Director of Advanced Physician Training for the Royal Australian College of Physicians in this region. In 2015, he was nominated by the training network to the Australian Medical Association as ‘Supervisor of the Year’, and in 2016, as ‘Teacher of the Year’.
A/Professor Alford instituted Port Macquarie as a site for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians Clinical Exam and was the regions’ original examiner. He undertook this role for over a decade before being appointed a member of the Senior National Examining Panel for the Royal Australian College of Physicians in 2014.
A/Professor Alford has been Chairman of, or Committee member of almost all the principal medical groupings in the region, including:
